Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Is EKOKIT a kitset house?

While the major components of an EKOKIT are prefabricated and delivered to you in a container, EKOKIT is not a kitset in the usual sense – it is rather a system for building a comfortable, sustainable, flexible home that minimises the waste associated with traditional house building while also keeping the cost at a sensible and affordable level.

Because of this, EKOKIT is generally suitable for building in situations where a ‘no kitsets’ rule applies, but if you have any concerns about this, we are happy to speak to any developer, local council or funding institution on your behalf.

Can I customise one of the designs?

Some customisation of designs is possible, although it is important to remember that the standard EKOKIT options have been specifically designed to be affordable, energy efficient and easy to construct, and making changes may affect one or more of these important qualities. Your EKOKIT consultant can advise you of the feasibility of  any customisation you are considering, along with any associated fees and/or other costs.

Can I build EKOKIT in stages?

Yes – in fact most of the EKOKIT home options have been designed specifically to allow this. So, if your budget is tight, or your needs are modest, you can start off small and grow your home at a later date as your needs change or finance becomes more available. You can even  re-use the joinery and claddings as you add to your EKOKIT home.

Can I build the house myself?

Yes – if you are a Licensed Building Practitioner (LBP) with a Level 2 – Construction  license or higher. If you are not, then you must ensure that construction of your EKOKIT home is supervised by someone who is. In this case, it is up to you to decide and agree with the LBP their exact level of involvement, but at the very least they must ensure that all required council inspections take place and that all construction is completed to the supplied plans, and in accordance with the New Zealand Building Code –  including obtaining the final Code Compliance Certificate

Do you offer any warrantees or guarantees?

We warrant that all of the plans and building materials outlined in your contract to buy an EKOKIT will be provided to you by the agreed dates and that they will be free of faults or defects or they will be remedied or replaced at no additional charge. You will need to arrange and confirm guarantees or warrantees for workmanship and all other materials not supplied in your EKOKIT package with your LBP and/or the relevant sub trades. Hybrid Homes and/or ebode take no responsibility for your choice of LBP, sub-trades or additional materials, or for their performance or the quality of their workmanship.

Do the low flow shower heads mean a dribbly shower?

Low flow shower heads have been specifically designed to still give you a decent shower pressure but with reduced water use and therefore lower water bills.
